Happy Tuesday :)

I thought unicorn might have gone viral by now, but it's hardly got any views! :( I've put it on instagram with a link and as a comment in the Youtube community.

October's Adsense has been calulated and the amount pending payment next week is £1069.13, which is the first time I've broken the £1000 barrier for a long long time. To celebrate I purchased a new laptop charger as I keep leaving at OHs, so now I have one in each house ;)

One interesting thing I have done today is applied to be a Youtube Ambassador in my area. It would be cool to meet others that do this and to arange some events and group training. As a bronze subscriber I can apply for this. To get to silver and get my own partner manager (woohoo) I need 100000+ subscribers, another 52142. At the current rate that'll take me 22 months - I wonder if I can do this by the end of next year

I'll be spending some time looking around the creator hub for extra tips!

I think you have the right idea. Keep creating content and let them become viral themselves. Trying to second guess what will go viral hardly works for companies with massive marketing and social media departments so don't beat yourself up too much about it.

Be careful trusting 'communities' (even this one!) as the basis for ideas as it is a very limited set of users. When you have 10million plus views on individual videos you know you have stuff that appeals to the masses. Are there other character videos you could do without copywrite notices being slapped on you?

And great news on requiring a 2nd adapter. ;) glad to hear your computer has a second place it automatically logs into the wifi :)

That can be the way it is sometimes. Sometimes content you think will 'pop' just doesn't. I would say that if you think that the content is going to go viral keep at it a bit longer. It may be just that video that didn't take off but another one of the same topic would.

I think it's really difficult to guess what's going to go viral and what isn't, that's fit the public to decide. I think it can be down to luck as well. I agree with Jon's suggestion, unicorns are popular at the moment so it's worth doing another similar video.

Well done for breaking the £1k barrier!

Both excellent points. I'm going to make few versions of the unicorn video and hope that one of them takes.

That's also worth bearing in mind. The amount of money some companies spend in marketing that doesn't work. There is no magic formula. Today I'm in a good place, so I will continue rinsing and repeating.

I had this comment on 1 of my top 5 videos yesterday

"oh dear that is so not funny it made me sad :( thats absolut cringe fest of a birthday card, that only a 3 year old would laugh at, anyone with an iq higher than 1 can apreciate that it is not funny in the slightest, you would have to be 0 GCSE's and be on benifits to find that funny, F*** my life so much, why does god let stuff like this happen, i rather put my D*** in a blender than watch that again, i would jump of a f**** bridge it someone sent me that :( :( :( :( :(" (edited for language!)

Which I actually thought was quite funny, so I replied as follows

"ok help me out here, as providing funny stuff for everyone is sooo difficult! Your post was funny!! Describe what kind of birthday card you would find funny, and I’ll make it ☺️ has to be clean tho !!"

Reply
"oh dear, i dont think i can think of anything wouldnt really offend anyone else, you see i have a very diffrent kind of humour to this, i find 4 chan ylyl's funny but there full of sexist/racist jokes, not sure thats what you want on a birthday card. so to be perfectly honest i dont think i can come up with an idea without it being very discriminating against someone else. i would deffinitly like to help with funny content but i dont think having it on a birthday card is the right way to go, without offending people. sorry to disapoint and thanks for the offer :)"

So even those with plenty to say stuggle with the ideas ;)

Well, half way through my November challenge, and really enjoying it so far. I've rediscovered YT forums, written a plan with a keyword list, loaded 18 new videos that have 8989 views between them. Unfunny puppy is still the most viewed and has grossed $2.25. I spent $252 in November and $269 in October on fiverr. £400 Gosh that's alot. I will be taking a bit of a break from fiverr now, and will find different ways to redeliver the content I already have. I'm going to keep a tally to see how long it takes for the £400 investment to be recouped. I tend to think if I can get my money back within a year it's a good investment.

Personally I'd block him..

And, IMO, never reply to someone who comments like that. Block and move on. They don't deserve to be even discussed with. And his reply was a prime example of the mentality of people like him - degrade/insult/put down to make himself feel better. Its a mindset I don't understand.

Him (and people like him) are not your target audience. I'd also bet one whole pound, that even if you made the best video ever, he'd still find it 'shit' and complain.

Oh I don't mind really, I thought his response was quite funny. I've had some really bad ones in the past, and I just report them using the report button.

Tonight, the whole evening has been spent going through my key word list, and checking which keywords I have youtube content for. Amazingly it seems I've never used some really obvious key words like 'funny birthday video' and 'email birthday cards', never designed any for those doh. I could add the words to current videos, but I think I'll make new content. I've also tidied up some of the YT content, added in some key words. Also I've added some closed captions to some of the more popular spoken videos. According to google "Subtitles and closed captions open up your content to a larger audience, including deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers or those who speak languages besides the one spoken in your video." I've made notes of where I've made changes and I will go back in a month and see if it's have any effect on views.

This was yesterdays video, free to make, a bit cringy but it seems to have started well.

here's a question

Have you looked at uploading your videos to other platforms.

Make a group on facebook called 'birthday videos' or something and upload them onto then

Also maybe dailymotion

I just wonder if there are other platforms you can share the same content on so creative wise you haven't got to do anymore

Having them on YT gets ad revenue. I'm not sure facebook and dailymotion are the same? I think the facebook idea one is a great one, if you load links back to the original YT videos. Facebook sharing can be done with one click and things can 'go viral' very quickly.

I’m travelling, so typing on the mobile, excuse typos and abbreviations!

Other platforms is a really interesting topic. I do have a Facebook page called happy birthday songs or something, but I’m not very good at posting regularly. I paid someone to do it for a year but never really saw a return, I’m not sure why. I don’t think you can actually monetise the Facebook videos, unless I’m mistaken?
Daily motion used to be good but now I only get about $10 a month if that. They pay per view, but it’s not adsense. Having said that I haven’t uploaded anything for yonks, must do that.

The other platform I use is 123Greetings, I got a statement from them last week, and year til end of October was $1088. They are quite fussy and often reject content which annoys me like mad, and their upload software is mega temperamental. So I can spend an hour loading a video then get it rejected as I’ve missed out an apostrophe or something . But for the money it’s good. The top contributors on there make $1000 upwards a month.

I don’t know of any other platforms, but will have another search.

I’ve had an email inviting me to a fiverr.com meet up next month, so have registered and looking forward to that.

I have videos scheduled now until the 27th November, and 3 more to upload so that’s November about wrapped up. None of them have gone viral yet, but views, watch time and subscribers are all up. I sort of want to continue it until the end of the year now, it’s got a bit addictive!!

Thank you for your comments/suggestions/critique all very valuable and keep me motivated

I've jst checked Daily Motion, I earned $2.47 in October o_O
Having said that I haven't uploaded anything since June, so I'll load what I've been owrking on since then and see if it makes a difference. It looks like DM has had an overhaul recently, so maybe things might be looking up.

The title of my diary is 'money making opportunites' and not ' youtube income', and my diary seems to have only focused on the YT for so long.
Jons prompt above about other platforms is really interesting, I have become too focussed on 1 thing. I will start to upload more to the other platforms I know about and also see what else I can find.
Also I was telling some-one about MB yesterday. I haven't done it for around 2 years, I found it exhausting, but I did go all out and made £700 in 10 days!
I'm currently working my notice in my main job (I have another one, I'm not giving up working for a living just yet!) and to say things are very quiet is an understatement, and as I work from home when I'm not travelling, I am very time rich right now.
Sooooooo I'm going to do a little a day matched betting, I'm going to dive back in, but be a bit more sensible about it this time so I don't burn out after a week. Since I did it last I have moved house, so hopefully I can set up new accounts with everyone. I feel a list coming on...

Things I need to do

  • Upload to Youtube every day
  • Upload to Daily motion every day
  • Upload to 123 Greetings as and when
  • 1 hour matched betting every day
  • Reply to all quotes/enquiries/followups for doors as and when
  • 1 hour on mirror door website every day
  • 1 hour on birthday website every day
  • 30 mins exercise every day

That's nearly a full time job!

Sounds like you have plenty to do while you WFH! I keep threatening to take up MB again and I had quite a healthy pot (£2k) but this summer it was all withdrawn for life reasons! :D I could do with building that back up.

There's a video that's been 'doing the rounds' on social media today that's of people that have been to see Steps in Leeds and are dancing away in the carpark after the concert

I've being shared all over Twitter and FB

Just needs a bit of monetization but you get my point

Hopefully all for good life reasons. May be we need a thread for returning match betters!!

Very good life reasons :)

I do think that the 'pot' was probably 75% MB winnings and 25% my cash inserted to help fund MB. Unfortunately it was all the easy starter offers (inc £200 one for B365) so it a big headline figure but tailed off which is why I stopped (well part of the reason).

A little up date.

I have been thinking a lot and refocusing (yes again sorry!) I discovered The Youtube Creators Academy Podcasts, which I've been listening to in the car, and has been very thought provoking. As I said in a previous post I have been very focused on just the one thing, youtube and adsense.

Many of the people interviewed on the podcasts have monetised their channel in other ways too, such as affiliate links and sponsership. I also have the website, although doesn't get shed loads of traffic, (21000 visitors in October) I haven't really touched it for years. I also wrote an ebook, which when I look at it now is rubbish! But the concept is OK, and there is a HUGE potential to get some affiliate links in there.
I'm going to have the cover redesigned and play around with the content and then republish. Here it as as it is now http://www.great-happy-birthday-ideas.com/support-files/101-birthday-ideas-ebook.pdf
I'd be delighted for some tough feedback!

As to MB, I can't face it, haven't got the headspace, I was thinking of buying my skint 19 year old son a subscription to PA for his birthday though!

Sooo, November has ended, and I have kept to the schedule of loading a new video every day. What have I learned....

1. I've made probably an additional $30 this month. So, if I was thinking this was going to catapult me into the next stage of income I was very wrong

2. I've been listening to podcasts and looking at how other people do things. I learned that someone else had tried this experiment and they too found that the daily uploads did not yield the view increase they hoped, however consistently loading 2 or 3 times a week over a period of time made a bigger difference. Consistency seems to come up time and time again

3. I have learned that thumb nails and titles are key to getting the clicks. I've had a play with some of my thumbnails, and also have ordered one to be professionally done (on fiverr obviously)

4. Most successful youtubers make more money from affiliate links than AdSense

5. I can schedule uploads for a future date (why did I never know this before doh)

6. I discovered a new tool called tubebuddy, which helps with all sorts of things and makes the upload process more targeted and comprehensive, I'm currently trying out the free version. It has told me that my best times to upload are a Thursday and a Saturday at 4pm

7. I need to work to a plan and keep focused on targeted key words

8. I 'came across' the Community tab. Then learned that this had only been recently introduced and only certain youtubers were given access to it - aw feel so special :). Engagement seems to be quite good, so I will definitely keep on with it.

9. I still have no idea what makes a video go viral, and neither it seems does anyone else!!

10. People want humour

It’s been a very worthwhile and interesting month. Even though it didn’t work out how I wanted it to, it’s given me a much clearer way forward, rather than just randomly uploading any old stuff.

The most successful video has been one I loaded just before the start of November. Mr Penguin

65000 views in just over a month and $45 income, it cost $55 to make, one of my quickest ever paybacks :)

I think what you did during November was a worthwhile experiment, you seem to have learnt a lot from it, although not what you expected.

Out of curiosity, when one of your videos goes viral, does it go viral straight away or can it be months later?

I can see why that penguin video did well, I love it!

So sorry i didn't reply to you, I never saw your post!
Firstly merry Christmas, happy new year to all.

Videos sometimes take off straight away, but often they can hang around for up to a year before they start getting shed loads of views. I talk to so many people about it, and not one person nows the answer to why!

Yes November was interesting, i'm much more focussed now, and I have a plan. The month generated a lot of thought, and I've been consuming lots of youtube creator podcast content. November, although didn't generate any viral videos, but yield a very nice £1121.989 into my account.

As we came up to Christmas everything dropped significantly, views, watch time, likes, comments, subscriber rates, however oddly my income has stayed the same.

Let's see what 2018 has in store for us all. Wishing you a happy, healthy and wealthy New Year

I love that you share your stats here, well done on the money, that is great!

I often find January is a really busy month for traffic / money - hope it is a good one for us all!

Well no January wasn't a good month! Infact it never is I find, i hope it was a very different story for you!

December was my best month for a long time with a payout of £1151, and January's payment is LOW at £612, but it's been picking up strongly in February. This is the first January that I've been really ready for the post Christmas dip, so I was not disappointed!
I'm plodding along, listing 1 video each week religiously, which takes 2-3 hours with researching, corresponding with collaborators, editing and loading.

This is the one that has been doing the best from recent uploads. Cost $70 to make and returned $32.53 since uploading on 15th December, so will be a winner over time.
